Hans Geser

Rapperswil, 26. März 1947 – 23. Mai 2025

Sociologist, professor at the University of Zurich from 1986 to 2012, and from 1997 the maker of Sociology in Switzerland and of this site.

He built them as an open library: his own research on Swiss politics, municipalities, work and the beginnings of digital communication; the complete works of Georg Simmel, which he put online when almost nothing was; and the theses of the students he taught. Among colleagues he was known early on as the one who took the internet seriously as an object of sociology, and as a teacher who put his students' work next to his own.

He died on 23 May 2025. His family keeps his sites online as he left them.
